. . .but it misses the mark by having too many flaws. As far as textbooks are concerned, it tries to do a good job making statistics assessable to those who do not yet grasp the subject but it fails to do so for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, many of the concepts are not presented clearly and often assumes that the student has completely mastered them before moving on. This is particularly evident as the book progresses and one needs to hunt for topics that were presented one hundred pages (or more) previously and have not been discussed since.

It is necessary to continuously jump around to previous pages in order to find materials being referenced and new examples do not contain all of the information need to solve them. While the solutions to many practice problems are found at the back of the book, they are not explained adequately making it almost impossible to determine how to reach the correct solution.

While this text is on the right track (disregarding the author’s personal biases regarding his non-statistical political agendas), it is incomplete and leads to many additional (and needless) hours work through. For those who have not had a statistics course, this can cause a lot of grief. I ended up purchasing several other books in order to gain an understanding of what the author did not explain effectively. For me, this was compounded by the fact that our class devoured this book in a mere ten weeks – far too much information (especially when that information is not presented sufficiently) to glean in such a short period of time.

It’s difficult to write a glowing review for a statistics textbook. Even if it’s an excellent book, deserving of five stars, it’s treating a subject the study of which, for most people, ranks right up there between watching paint dry and getting warts removed.

I’ve used several statistics textbooks in teaching, tutoring and studying stats. Some of them had great illustrations, and some had a cool CD in the back. Most had instructions for using a TI calc, Excel or Minitab to solve problems. Some tried to push a sociopolitical agenda through careful selection of examples and problems. But until this book, none of them did a decent job of explaining, in plain language, what all the “things” in statistics really meant.

Finally we have a textbook that explains to the student studying statistics for the first time, what the “standard deviation of the mean” (to choose a random example) really means, and why he/she should care. Other books may try, but their language is still up there in Math Land. This book gets it right.

This book also has the great illustrations, the cool CD in back, the TI/Excel/Minitab instructions. It also has the sociopolitical agenda, as evidenced in the authors’ choices for examples and problems. In a clever bit of self-parody, the book warns repeatedly about how easy it is to promote a sociopolitical agenda through the judicious use of statistics.

The authors announce at the beginning of the book that it will not include any “how-to” algorithms or practice for calculating basic statistics by hand, since everyone has access to tools that do the hard work for you. That’s a disappointment. Every student of statistics ought to calculate a standard deviation by hand once in their life, just so they know how it’s done.

I have never taken a Stats course before and I find this book deficient in several areas. First of all, I do not think it gives comprehensive explanation involving many concepts. Secondly, the problems at the end of each chapter incorporate formulas, equations of concepts that haven’t been covered previously. Therefore, it’s difficult to complete homework without much invesetigation and frustration! Lastly, I do not care for how the book refers back to previous examples on several occcasions. This cause you to have to jump back and forth in the book. Besides that, many of the illustrations have similar titles (e.g. example, figure, exercise..) and can lead to some confusion.

How to Win Friends & Influence People

how-to-win-friends-influence-peopleEditorial Reviews:

This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to “the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people.” He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person’s point of view and “arousing in the other person an eager want.” You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, “let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers,” and “talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.” Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks. –Joan Price

This is quite possibly the best self-help book ever written. I have read my share of this genre and yet this is the one I always come back to. Simple and effective in it’s instruction, the book does a great job in setting you back on the right course. I have read this book three times, and I’m sure I will continue to revisit it.

5 out of 5 stars “Do well by doing good” (Ben Franklin) January 24, 2009
Queen_Anne_Drizzle (Seattle, WA)
For many years I had falsely judged this book by its title which suggested that it aimed to deceive people in order to influence and befriend them. Can you teach manners, compassion or kindness to adults? After numerous recommendations I gave in and decided to read the book and am very happy to have overcome my initial bias. This book does not merely teach readers how to make friends and influence them. More importantly it is an examination of human nature and the virtues of doing good. There is an anecdote in the book where the author complements a bored postal worker on his hair. Someone asks him what the author hoped to gain from the postal worker. The answer was nothing concrete but to make the worker feel good about himself. What was implied is that the author gained also by knowing that he was making the worker happy. A win-win situation. Carnegie, through many anecdotes makes a convincing case for good behavior.

Many of the author’s advice are incredibly simple such as “listen”, “don’t criticize”, and “smile”. One does not need obvious training to understand these advice but yet as one reflects on what goes on in the real world these deceptively simple tasks are not so easy. This book will help you perform these strategies better by first convincing you of their benefits and second by teaching you how. As the author recommends, readers will maximize the benefit from this book by intermittently reviewing it. Ben Franklin was always trying new ways to improve himself – this book will help readers tremendously with self-improvement. Whether you are interested in improved relations with co-workers, spouses, children or parents, this book will be invaluable.

If you have any technological aptitude, skip this book. It contains very little useful information, and you can find it all for free on the internets anyway. For example, looking up a word “the easy way” involves opening up the search function and typing it in. Then, when the results page comes up, you scroll down to “Dictionary” or “Wikipedia”. Wow, what a terribly obvious thing to do.

About an hour after I got my kindle, I was still fumbling around trying to find FREE books. I read the directions that came with the Kindle, and there was not much information. Luckily I came upon the Cookbook and an hour later I was a kindle expert! For all the griping some people do regarding the Kindle’s limitations, it far exceeded my expectations. Being able to view weather, news and even send and receive gmail was a nice surprise. I am madly in love with my Kindle and The Cookbook played a big role in the relationship.

The Kindle Cookbook: How To Do Everything the Manual Doesn’t Tell You

First, let me thank you for such a fast reply!

I should explain that I am a little dense regarding this technology, but when I saw that your reply talked about a recipe I thought this must be spam. It soon dawned on me that I was getting a reply for which I had sent in a question re: the Kindle Cookbook . Recipe – cookbook.Duh!

Your instructions were crystal clear and it worked like a charm. Thank you for the great book and for your fast reply.

The book is well worth the price. It is the 3rd manual I have referred to and it is the best by far.

Sincerely,

R L

Harmony Singing By Ear

February 6, 2009 by Lifestyle Editor

5186hbcw08l_sl160_Editorial Reviews:

Album Description

Harmony Singing By Ear: A step by step approach for learning how to sing harmonies above and below a melody. Three CDs totaling three 1/2 hours of instructional narrative, fully produced music tracks and guide vocals. One, two or more singers can learn two and three-part harmony singing. Vocal coach Susan Anders has successfully used these methods for over twenty years with pop, R&B, folk, rock and country singers.Harmony Singing By Ear uses two complementary methods to teach singers how to harmonize by ear. After reviewing some music theory basics, instructional sections walk you through how to find the upper and lower harmony parts for eight songs. Those same harmonies are sung on fully produced music tracks. On these tracks the vocal parts are panned to different speakers–singers can pan to one speaker and just hear their part, pan to the middle and hear both parts, or pan to the other speaker to practice with one or two other parts. In this way, beginning harmonizers can control how much or how little of the other voices they hear, making it easier to stay on their part. More confident harmonizers can sing without the guide vocals. Singers who simply want to learn and sing the harmony parts can skip the instructional tracks, go right to the music tracks, and pan their speakers to the right to learn the harmony part for each song.

Though much of Harmony Singing By Ear focuses on the how-tos of parallel harmonizing above and below a melody, singers will also learn about call-response, blue note, chromatic and block chord harmonies. Music tracks without vocals are also included so singers can practice their parts “without the training wheels”. Plus, there’s a supplementary section of exercises to build one’s harmonizing skills. The songs range in style from pop to R&B to folk to modern rock to jazz.

This is a great way to learn about and practice harmony singing. I have always had a fascination with how good harmonies make a song so much better, and wanted to learn how to do it without spending a ton of money, or trying to get other singers who were just as clueless to practice with me.

The author clearly lays out how to approach hearing the harmonies and some basic theory. The most valuable part is the practice songs, of which there are many on this 3 CD set. Being able to pan the balance to either side to hear the main vocal or the harmony vocal, and practice along with it is a great way to develop your ear and “feel” for the right pitch. It also makes commuting unbelievably fun!

I like the songs on this CD and enjoy playing it while working in the kitchen for vocal practice. I would compare the approach on the CD to learning a language conversationally–there is only a little theory and you learn by copying. It’s good as far as it goes, but I’d like to get more theory.

If you are a frustrated, wannabe harmony singer who is tired of hearing other people harmonize with what appears to be no effort, this CD will change your life. Other instructional CDs and books might have better graphic design or slick cover art, but this CD actually delivers.

Here’s the key (no pun intended): listen to all of the included CDs, but listen to the first CD over and over and over again until it sinks in. I kept this CD in my car and would sing along with it every time I drove somewhere — even to the grocery store. Then, I might put it away for a month or two…and pull it out and start all over again. I don’t have a lick of musical training, but Susan’s gentle, common sense approach is perfect for a beginner. After listening to Susan’s CD multiple times, I moved on to regular music CDs that already had harmony backup singers. I listened to their parts, learned them as best I could and sang along. Eventually, I got to a point where I never even bothered to really “learn” the melody. I would just listen for the harmony. Finally, I reached my goal of being able to find the harmony (on my own) and sing along with my better half, Ben Bedford, who writes beautiful Americana/folk songs.

What started out as a strong desire to simply to sing along in the living room has evolved into so much more. In fact, with assistance from Nashville singer-songwriter, Sally Barris, I sang harmony on Ben’s most recent CD. [...] I sing harmony on the songs “Harley Albright” and “Virginia Girls.” His CD was recorded in Nashville a year ago — and I feel like I am even more prepared for the next one! I’ve also started singing live with him when he performs — something I didn’t think I would ever feel comfortable doing.

Thanks for putting out a great product!
