Memories of the necessity of living one way in the outside world and another way in the Jewish community. It includes some nostalgic and some humorous vingnettes. It was a bit too long in my opinion.

Herman Wouk is an exceptional writer and this book lives up to all the others. I feel like I know the characters and I’ve gained a much better understanding of Jewish life in America.

“Inside, Outside” comes as close to being an outright autobiography as Wouk is likely to write.”"Wouk demonstrates his ability to write with compassion about people both literary and historical, real and imaginary.”

Wouk’s 1985 saga is a social comedy of Jewish-American life reaching from New York to Jerusalem and spanning much of the 20th century.

Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A true believer’s testimonial on the power of positive thinking. In the vein of The Secret, but without its esoteric mumbo jumbo, Law of Attraction Handbook breaks down into easy steps the process by which one acquires wealth, success, power and the heart’s desire. Adherents to the Law of Attraction believe that the energy we emit into the universe determines what comes back to us. If we vibrate positive notions (I will lose weight, I will find love, I will be promoted to a managerial position), then we will attract what we desire. If we send out negative vibes, we run the risk of becoming magnets for unpleasantness. Al-Maimani explains the Law then devotes short chapters to its usual accoutrements: auras, affirmations and visualizations. The book focuses largely on a spiritual reading of the Law, and each chapter ends with a summation and a series of devotional exercises or instructions that teach ways to manifest the Law in the life of the practitioner. The Law has its roots in 19th-century spiritualism. In the 20th century it was co-opted by the New Agers and, when its money-making potential was realized, taken for a roller-coaster ride by motivational gurus like Tony Robbins. Thus, the path to happiness became as cluttered as the Las Vegas strip. Al-Maimani declares himself a disciple of Robbins and other flashy preachers of the Law, but while his book is filled with the jargon of his mentors, it is not ostentatious. It is billed as a handbook not for high-test dreamers and those who aspire to fame and riches, but for the everyman. The author’s writing is clear and concise, with a sincerity that is engaging-he is earnest, never glib, and so his message seems genuine. A simplistic but heartfelt how-to for self-helpers.-Kirkus Discoveries

Again the author has created a quick and easy to read handbook. He provides common sense options for changing the way we think about our outlook on life in general. Each chapter contains a consolidation of practical information and ideas that helped me with a difficult time my son is having in his life and ways I may be able to help him get out of his rut. I like this book, it is easy to read and really helps me think before acting on a situation. I have sent my son a copy of the book in hopes that it will help him find peace.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret Book: Law of Attraction Tools and Techniques September 7, 2008

The book title was very attractive to me, where I read many books on Law of Attraction. Some detail the concept and make it very theoretical, some will just make you read and read and you lose your focus but this book is totally different. This book is very simple and focused on the same time. Many tools and techniques have been described and made available for the immediate applications.

The author defined affirmation, its magic in enhancing the attraction process of any goal or desire. Also, similar treatment of other tools and techniques like visualization, feelings and meditation to speed up and amplify getting the goals and desires were offered.

I used it for my work and for my own life and I found miraculous results.
This is the book that I was looking for and it has just arrived.

I have always been a little cynical when it comes to books that promise to help you become rich, or a better person, or successful in anything you want. Most books in the genre tend to be pretentious, long winded and occasionally make very little sense.

The Law of Attraction Handbook, therefore, came as something of a surprise. A self help book that comes in at under a hundred pages, has short and concise chapters and a small easy to follow collection of exercises for readers to carry out in order to make their dreams come true.

The Law of Attraction Handbook explains the theory and practicality behind the whole concept of mind over matter leading anyone to achieve anything. Al-Maimani opens with a preface based on his own experiences when dealing with the failures of his life and how this changed thanks to some very simple changes to his thought process.

The chapters read easily, very easily for a book dealing with a kind of science. This is not like a text book where the reader has to frequently pause to check the dictionary for meanings, or where hours are lost in research and assignments with very little outcome. This book seems different. It doesn’t preach, or expect the world from its readers, all it offers is a step by step guide on how you could change your life for the better.

The book ends with a short series of tasks that should take no more than a couple of a minutes a day over a three week period. The exercises are as simply explained as the theories of the book, and can easily be carried out by anyone.

The most important thing this book asks for is a little belief. If you are willing to give it that, then is definitely a book worth seeking out.

This book is a masterpiece! I couldn’t stop reading it. Many limiting believes, many wrong images, many uncomfortable moments held me back on the past. I learned from this book multiple techniques on how to go beyond the boundary and have more choices, select the right images and enjoy every single moment of my life.

It talks about Law of Attraction straight to the point without any unnecessary stuff that consumes time and distracts the focus.

My experience with this book simply can be summarized as if I have been given the correct combination to unlock a world of infinite possibilities or to live an extraordinary life.

An old concept recently revived by creators of “The Secret” encourages people to start believing they can manifest and create whatever they desire in their lives. Al-Maimani’s handbook is supplemental to many of the books in the market proponing the same ideas. His concise, easy-to-read handbook skips over long drawn-out explanations and gets right to the point.

One of the primary beliefs within the Law of Attraction is put into words by Al-Maimani “…what you put out into the universe comes back to you – whether wanted or unwanted.” Using personal experiences Al-Maimani explains how the Law worked in his life. He also references specific books and teachers that encourage the same belief.

“Law of Attraction Handbook” offers three simple exercises with a basic step one: Declare Your Desires. Personally, I believe a large amount of people find this the most difficult and often can’t focus on what their actual desires are. This is because we are expected to know what we want. Al-Maimani encourages us to write what we don’t want first. He emphasizes, by writing what we don’t want first clears the way for what we do want. Once this list is made, Al-Maimani gives steps two and three in a simple manner. Believing you can manifest the true desires makes steps two and three an easy way for the desires to come to fruition.

Al-Maimani questions the readers, which allows them to look within themselves to find the answers. One of the questions is `So what is going on in your subconscious mind?” He then briefly explains to find out what is going on in our subconscious mind is to check the emotions and feelings that are going on at that time. This is a very hands-on, experiential book.

Furthermore, what makes this book appealing are the Twenty-One Day Exercises in the back of the book. I haven’t completed them because of the timely submission of this review; however, I know this system works. I look forward to continuing the exercises.

“Law of Attraction Handbook” by Aiman A. Al-Maimani offers sound steps on achieving desires and goals, as well as guidelines on developing a successful, fulfilled life with steps that actually do work, if you work them and believe.

my-life-with-the-saintsEditorial Reviews:

Product Description
My Life with the Saints is at once James Martin’s inspiring memoir of spiritual self-discovery and an homage to the Catholic saints who accompanied him every step of the way. From his lukewarm childhood Catholicism to the executive fast track at General Electric to the Jesuits and a life dedicated to God, Martin looked and prayed to the saints–from St. Peter to Pope John XXIII–to intervene and guide his life. As this witty, confessional, and surprising account unfolds, we see how saints can help us each find our way in the world. Winner of the 2007 Christopher Award and the Catholic Press Award for best spirituality hardcover book of 2007, and named one of Publishers Weekly’s 100 Best Books of 2006.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Book   February 18, 2009
annie (MI)
Written in a very conversational manner, My Life With The Saints introduces the reader to the many canonized saints and several not yet canonized saints, that Fr. Martin has met on his spiritual journey. Coming from what has been described as a lukewarm Catholic family, Martin’s knowledge of the saints was slight as a young adult. Entering the Jesuit novitiate he was surprised that many of his fellow seminarians had great devotion to saints he knew little or nothing about.

When Martin talks about the saints he does not put them on a pedestal and paint them as perfect individuals who prayed all day. He tells their stories as they really were commenting that none of us are meant to be Therese of Lisieux or Pope John XXIII or Thomas More. We’re meant to be ourselves and to let God work in and through our individuality.

It was fun to read about saints I already knew like St. Therese of Lisieux, whom I learned a lot about during my nine years at St. Therese School. And, if you haven’t read The Autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux: The Story of a Soul, you really must. Also included is a chapter on a very holy man I had never heard of, Pedro Arrupe, and I look forward to learning more about him.

I really appreciate the section of the book, “For Further Reading”, with lists of additional books about the saints that he has written about. I will definitely be reading more of these books and buying some of them for our parish library.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The saints aren’t adored but they’re deeply appreciated as the human beings they were. I bought it six months ago and have already started a second reading.

Father James Martin presents a thoroughly readable book introducing us to his favorite saints and how they influenced his life. After he is finished discussing a saint, you feel you know them, warts and all. This is very comforting to those of us who have always felt we could never achieve that depth of spirituality.

I have always struggled with my faith, and recently it’s gotten worse. I don’t normally read religious literature, because I feel that much of it is written from a perspective I just can’t understand, in a language that assumes the reader shares the Church’s view on all things.

I chose this book to help me focus my intellectual energy in a positive direction. I want to take steps to feel closer to God during my spiritual crisis. This book was the perfect thing to stumble upon the other day, because the author is a “real guy,” with the perspective of one who has lived in the outside world, who has had a lay career, and who treats his subjects as humans like, well, like me.

Martin’s approach to describing the saints, as unique individuals, is one I’ve never seen before. In fact, as far as I’ve read so far, he hasn’t mentioned a single miracle performed by any saint. I feel like I have a better understanding of their personalities. I feel like saintly behavior is a little more possible for someone like me, and that’s a pretty remarkable feat for this book to accomplish.

I am excited to see which saints I will be drawn to, and am already looking forward to reading more about some of them.
